PC Satellite TV Review

PC satellite TV is the new kid on the block in digital satellite TV technology. So just what is so fascinating about being able to watch satellite TV on PC? Even as we discuss, there is an exodus of current viewers who are watching satellite TV channels on television sets to satellite TV on PC. Let us discover more about this PC satellite TV technology and see if the old satellite TV system is obsolete or still relevant.

PC satellite TV runs on a proprietary internet technology. In order to tap into the system and watch satellite TV on PC, you need to install and run a software application. Now, this software is available online and can be downloaded easily from the internet. Once installed and running, you will be able to locate a list of national and international satellite TV channels from Australia, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, China, Denmark, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, India, Japan, Kuwait, Mexico, New Zealand, Netherlands and Norway that you can watch. Of course, these channels include cartoons, movies, music videos and more. This is very similar to satellite TV services run by the service providers which give you hundreds of satellite TV channels.

In terms of program variety, watching satellite TV on PC has an advantage over traditional satellite dish TV systems. The difference here is PC satellite TV uses internet connection, whether dial-up or broadband to receive their feeds. Traditional satellite TV system relies on satellite dish setup and can vary depending on your locality, the range your satellite dish covers and whether it is multi or single satellite dish unit. With PC satellite TV, you get to watch more programs.

Satellite TV system run on a dish system comprising satellite dish, receiver, decoder, etc. Setting up can be a hassle and needs more than one pair of hands. When it is misaligned due to weather or physical knocks, someone has to climb up the roof to adjust it to optimal position to restore the reception. PC satellite TV users vouch for the ease of installation.

What about pricing? Satellite TV services are normally bundled in different TV packages and can vary in the specific program category and prices. But generally, payment is on a monthly basis with occasional promotional discounts for yearly subscriptions. DIY satellite dish TV systems are free but you have to be tech-savvy and familiar with setting up your own satellite TV equipment. A decent satellite dish system can set you back by hundreds to thousands of dollars. PC satellite TV software would cost you roughly $60 – 100.

Satellite TV offers great mobility to people on the move. No matter where you are, traveling on a yacht or car, you can get to enjoy satellite TV programs anytime you want. You are not restricted by the time zone since TV shows and movies are screened round the clock. This is where the satellite dish has an edge over PC satellite TV. While it is true that you can still get internet access while on the move, the exorbitant cost of connection can fry your pocket.

As you can see, each TV system has its merits. Discover the scoop about PC satellite TV at my blog and find out how you can watch satellite TV on PC today.

There are two methods available on how to repair plasma and LCD televisions: The offline classroom/school method; and the online teach-yourself methods. The offline method in the form of laboratory or school classroom courses are, quite admittedly, still an effective route to learning electronic repair skills. But this author believes that, with the ever increasing accessibility and speed of the internet, people should know the fact that there are already alternative ways of flat screen TV repair training that, on occasions, can be better and more effective than attending actual short courses in real and tangible classrooms in schools that offer these training.

Let me enumerate the distinct advantages of online over offline school courses:

1. With online/internet TV repair courses, your home is your classroom and laboratory and it is you who make your own class schedule. This convenience afforded by internet courses cannot be denied. By all means go to TV repair school in your boxers! No one would care!

2. The online TV repair courses that I have found so far are usually put together and maintained by real experts and practitioners in the field who have had practical experience in the trade for many years. You will see that they usually put all those years of experience into the course materials and they have better understanding of what common problems their students go up against in their quest to learn. Online instructors incorporate that understanding into their course materials.

3. Online TV repair schools offer courses that do not impose any time schedules so you virtually have all the time in the world! Real electronics schools only give time-limited courses so not everything in the repair text book can be discussed or taught by your instructors. Online course materials usually give more information and stuff than what can be covered and taught inside classrooms. You are only constrained by your own motivation to go through them all in your self-training. Learn at your own pace!

4. In terms of price, online courses are most likely cheaper than real classroom courses. This is because you do not need to pay any teachers and instructors. Neither do you need to pay for the depreciation of any equipment that they lend you in the course of the training. With online courses, you pay yourself by learning a new skill or improving on an existing one.

If you are the type of person who prefers the four-walled, structured classroom learning setting with white-boards, teachers and instructors to boot; if you like taking notes, doing home works and meeting deadlines; then you should sign up with the plasma or LCD TV repair school nearest your location. Now, if you prefer to keep your own time, if you like learning at the convenience and comfort of your own home using an internet-hooked computer and some basic TV repair tools, then go check out one of those online TV repair training courses out there.

NASCAR Hot Pass is a complementary television package available exclusively on DirecTV in the United States and on various cable & satellite providers in Canada. It debuted at the 2007 Daytona 500, which aired on February 18 of that year. In 2007 and 2008, it was a pay-per-view subscription package. However, starting in 2009, it is now free for all DirecTV subscribers, and the features were noticeably downgraded.

[edit] History

NASCAR Hot Pass debuted at the 2007 Daytona 500 on February 18. Kevin Harvick, who was seen on channel 796, was the race winner. Five channels, 795 to 799, featured different drivers, while a "mix" channel, 794, was a miniature version of each of the driver channels and links to their full screens. On the day after each race, channel 793 was used for "shortcuts," 30-minute excerpts of the previous day's (or night's) coverage. Both options have since been eliminated.

The in-car audio option was added at the UAW-DaimlerChrysler 400 on March 11.

[edit] 2007-2008

[edit] Pay-per-view Features

NASCAR Hot Pass includes a view of the race from a driver's in-car camera, unedited communications between the driver, crew chief, and spotter, and telemetry showing the car's speed and horsepower. Part of the screen also includes the live nationwide race broadcast.

The annual price was $99 per year, paid in two monthly installments of $49.50 each. As with all other DirecTV PPV sports packages, there is expected to be an annual renewal discount for subscribers with an account in good standing.

In mid-May 2007, DirecTV began offering a discounted rate of $79 for the remaining races of the season. In July, the price was slashed again, this time to $59. In each case, there are again two installments. From late August through the end of the season, the price was $19.95 for up to the final 11 races, the same price as each individual race up to that time.

In 2008, DirecTV offered a special rate of $40 for the entire season for new subscribers.

[edit] Format

[edit] 2007-2008

In 2007 and 2008, Hot Pass consisted of 10 channels between 790 and 799. The first four channels, 790 through 793, showed drivers selected by the producers and DirecTV. The drivers varied from race to race and will depend on a number of factors, including driver popularity and past performance on a given track.[1] In addition, for some races, one driver was selected based on an online vote. For example, the 2008 Daytona 500 free preview had Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Jeff Gordon, Kevin Harvick, and Tony Stewart.

During the race, viewers had the option of the live official telecast audio, the separate broadcast dedicated to the driver, and in-car communications between the driver and his team. During commercials, only the broadcast audio and in-car channel are available. Also during the breaks, race action is still available, but on a much smaller screen than at other times.

The fifth channel (794) simulcasted the main broadcast and provided subscribers a choice of 12 other audio channels from the drivers not chosen otherwise. Kurt Busch, Michael Waltrip, and Carl Edwards were among the options at the free preview.

Channels 795 through 799, the original Hot Pass channels, had the same features, only with high-definition video and enhanced-quality audio. HD equipment is required to access these channels.

If a driver already chosen has been eliminated from the race before its conclusion, other drivers were substituted. For example, Jimmie Johnson replaced Gordon at the 2008 Daytona 500, and Denny Hamlin filled in for Stewart at the same race the year before. Also, two substitutions were made on the same channel at the 2007 Pepsi 400, also a free preview, as J.J. Yeley filled in for Harvick, who in turn substituted for Stewart.

[edit] 2009: Change from pay-per-view to free

On December 10, 2008, NASCAR and DirecTV mutually agreed to end Hot Pass as a pay-per-view package. [2] For 2009, the package is now free to all DirecTV subscribers. The 4 driver channels (795-798) are still available and in HD, however all other features have been removed. [3]

The free version consists of a split screen shot of the featured drivers' in-car cameras on one side and a simulcast of the official race coverage on the other. The simulcast includes full audio, so sometimes two different audio feeds (the Fox/TNT/ESPN/ABC broadcast and the teams' two-way radio) are heard simultaneously. In some instances, including the red-flag delay and eventual ending to the 2009 Daytona 500, the network telecast is shown alone within a frame. Like the pay-per-view format, the in-car camera shots are commercial-free.

[edit] Driver appearances and performances

The following drivers were chosen for the two seasons that it was on pay-per-view: Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart, Denny Hamlin, Jeff Burton, Carl Edwards, Kurt Busch, Kevin Harvick, Juan Pablo Montoya, Greg Biffle, Jimmie Johnson, Matt Kenseth, David Stremme, Mark Martin, Ryan Newman, Clint Bowyer, Dale Jarrett, Jamie McMurray, Robby Gordon, Michael Waltrip, Kasey Kahne, Dave Blaney, Reed Sorenson, J.J. Yeley, Boris Said, and Martin Truex, Jr.

Earnhardt, Jr. appeared most frequently in 2007, being shown on 24 occasions. However, he was pulled from the lineup during the Chase for the NEXTEL Cup, for which he failed to qualify, after he had become a regular on almost a weekly basis, as NASCAR and DirecTV agreed to focus on the drivers that made the Chase.

Seven drivers won races on the same week(s) that they were featured in that first season: Kevin Harvick (Daytona 500, NASCAR NEXTEL All-Star Challenge), Matt Kenseth (Auto Club 500), Jimmie Johnson (Kobalt Tools 500), Jeff Gordon (Aaron's 499 and UAW-Ford 500), Juan Pablo Montoya (Toyota/Save Mart 350), Tony Stewart (Allstate 400 at the Brickyard and Centurion Boats at the Glen), and Carl Edwards (Sharpie 500 and Dodge Dealers 400).

[edit] Announcers in 2007 and 2008

NASCAR Hot Pass used announcers separate from the main national television broadcasts. For example, Rick Allen and Phil Parsons called the races when Dale Earnhardt, Jr. appeared on this package. ther commentators frequently heard were Wendy Venturini, Hermie Sadler, Doug Rice, Adam Alexander, and Pat Patterson. (Venturini became the first woman to call a NASCAR race when she did the lap-by-lap of Robby Gordon at the Toyota/Save Mart 350.) Steve Byrnes, Darrell Waltrip, Larry McReynolds, Brad Sham and Barry LeBrock have made occasional or one-shot appearances.

When Waltrip made his debut at the Pepsi 400, his signature race-beginning call of "boogity boogity boogity" was simulcast on all five channels.

Mike Joy[4] and former WRC (Washington, D.C.) sportscaster George Michael[5] have also been linked to reports that they will be on Hot Pass; however, they never appeared as far as is known.

[edit] Nascar iN Car

Nascar Hot Pass had similar to another service called Nascar iN Car. Nascar iN Car was started in 2003 by iN Demand Networks and was exclusive to digital cable subscribers for three years.[6]

Nascar iN Car was discontinued after the introduction of Nascar Hot Pass. Nascar Hot Pass performed better than Nascar iN Car. Nascar Hot Pass had 100,000 more subscribers than Nascar iN Car in 2007. Nascar iN Car had 30,000 subscribers in 2006. The price for a season of Nascar iN Car was the same as Nascar Hot Pass[7]

[edit] Availability

NASCAR Hot Pass is available through the following cable and satellite providers:

Many people think the Satellite TV for PC including other PC Satellite TV software are scams. For the simple reason they don't always work once downloaded to a computer. When merchants don't respond to consumers asking for help this leads to disputes, complaints, frustration, and more refund requests by consumers who later scream 'SCAM' over the Internet for all the hear.

As for the skeptics who didn't buy, they can only sympathize and say "I told you so." But there's more to understand here. Obviously, no one can honestly say that all PC Satellite TV are scams. Even some skeptics still keep a close eye out for the one software that just might convince them to buy.

Don't get me wrong, there are many scams that exist with these types of software due to fraudulent merchants. Unfortunately, this gives the better software (the ones that actually work) a bad name. Generally speaking, good merchants will help consumers resolve problems if they are minor. But as long as tech support responds back within 48 hours, makes an effort to resolve problems, and the merchant or e-commerce sales/refund processor honors their money-back guarantee, perhaps consumers will be less inclined to holler SCAM.

There are several things that can keep a software like Satellite TV for PC and others like it from working with a computer. But honestly, you might want to rule out the software as being the main reason why it doesn't work on a computer. The real problem could stem from something involving the software-to-computer compatibility. In rare cases, even a good PC Satellite TV software may not work and there are at least three good reasons why that is so...

1) When users try to use a 56k modem (very low bandwidth) to play Internet TV channels with larger bandwidths, many channels aren't going to work/play. That's why using a broadband connection is preferred, either DSL or High Speed at 512kbps or higher. Unfortunately, the downside to many of these software involves merchants that don't give you any or just some tweaking information, in case you run into minor problems. Instead, you have to contact the merchant or try to find a resolution on your own while waiting for a response.

2) Users have previously installed software on their computers that's blocking the Satellite for PC software from working. You may or may not have heard that a firewall (anti-virus software) can block any Internet TV software from working. The resolution for this is to simply give your firewall permission to allow the software to work. If that's not the case, then it's best to try to rule out the problem by taking a look at your other application (software) icons currently running in the lower right corner. Close one at a time to see if this will let the software play.

Note: When I downloaded my first Satellite for PC software it wouldn't play. My firewall was blocking it. I emailed the merchant about th problem and they responded back within 24 hours with a website address to correct the problem. After reading the firewall instructions on how to give my McAfee anti-virus software permission to let the Satellite TV for PC software play, it worked.

3) Users didn't follow system minimum requirements prior to downloading the software, or didn't download all the free software as required such as, RealPlayer, Windows Media Player, Quicktime Player, and Microsoft .Net Frameswork. And more importantly, the software version for all of these free products must be correct. Each of these software are very important and required, if any PC Satelite TV software is going to work. Sometime problems will be no video and audio, or no video but audio works, or certain channels don't play.

Windows Media Player is especially important and if it's the default player, it has a lot to do with video files being able to play on the merchant's PC Satellite TV player. Sometimes a little tweaking is needed to get the video to work. If Realplayer is the default player than it may require some tweaking. Make sure the right bandwidth (connection speed) is selected for all players.

You check the following. Open Windows Media Player (WMP) then right click where it says "Windows Media Player" at the top. A menu will appear, now select Tools >>Options. Click "File Types" tab and make sure the first three boxes are checked for asf, wma, and wmv. On my computer, I have all boxes checked, and the WMP is my default player. Next click "Apply" if you've made any changes. Now click the "Performance" tab and choose your correct connection speed. Choose either "Detect connection speed (recommended) if you are not sure or "Choose connection speed." You may have to experiment with both, if there's a connection speed problem, later.

Now click "Apply" button, if any changes were made. Click the "Advance." If there's a problem with no video but audio only, experiment by decreasing the "Digital video" acceleration slider half way or checking/un-checking the "Use video video mixing renderer." For the "Network buffering, check "Buffer" and enter "30" seconds of content. Next, click "Apply" if any changes were made. Click "OK" or "Cancel" then click the "Network" tab, all boxes should be checked. Next, click the "OK" button to close the "Option" window.

Make sure RealPlayer and Quicktime Player have the correct connection speeds also. Just open each player and check.

In other words, experiment to see if any of these perimeter changes will fix the no video problem. If nothing works, then make sure to reset all perimeters to their original state. It is highly recommended that you make only one perimeter change at a time, then close the Media Player and PC Satellite TV player software then reopen it again to try to play different channels. You want to see if the software works and channels will load, buffer and play.

The hole idea is to tweak until you can resolve the no video problem. But make sure you've downloaded all the correct players for your OS (operating system). Otherwise, this can cause problems too. If all fails, then theres more tweaking to do. This information will be provided later.

All of the players mentioned above have special codecs that play different types of media files, for instance MP3 audio and video. Sometimes a codec is missing and requires downloading/installing it.

I have a five year old Toshiba Satellite laptop and have downloaded more than one PC Satellite TV software. Here are some of my system information...

Operating system: Windows XP SP2 (service pack 2); Processor speed: 2992 MHz; Total RAM: 1023 MB; Available RAM: 299 MB; Screen Resolution: 1400 x 900 pixels; Free Disk Space: 23591 MB; Internet Explorer: Ver 7; Mozilla Firefox Browser: Ver 2

As a result, good PC Satellite TV software do work but apparently not for every computer. Does this make the software a scam? The answer is no! Is all Satellite for PC software suited for everyone? Again no! I've always said that consumers need to know which software is better suited for them and addresses a primary need. For instance if someone is a variety TV enthusiast who simply loves everything TV, then s/he should download a software that provides that entertainment. The same goes for sports enthusiasts and movie enthusiasts to name a few.

Satellite TV for PC 2008 Elite, Pro, and Titanium Editions, including other good software like it can and do work. But just in case, make sure you know who provides the money back guarantee, the merchant or is it a 3rd party processor. The worst case scenario is the software simply won't work on your computer, and the last resort is to request a refund. When paying the small one-time downloading fee to install a software, make sure to keep the email receipt and instructions for disputes, refunds, etc.

Available now is a review site showcasing the "Best Top 5 Leading PC Satellite TV on the market today, which includes the Sat TV for PC. Also, there are other downloads for movies only, music only, games only, etc. You will also see "Resources" in the right column where to go to fix problems, as well as learn more about these types of software. Just click the appropriate link below, if interested.

Looking for ways to watch live satellite feed on your PC or laptop? Traditionally, people make use of hardware known as PCTV cards. However, there is a revolutionary alternative to that now. It comes in the form of software that enables PC or laptops to stream live satellite feed with the use of broadband network.

Why use software instead of PCTV cards? Well, one very obvious reason is that it will eliminate the need to open the computer and install the card inside. Although PCTV cards do come in the form of external USB device, you still have a hardware sitting on your desk. Also these cards will easily set you back by more than $50, not taking into consideration the time and effort in setting them up. The exciting thing about using this software is that since it is making use of the internet as the medium for live video feeds, a WIFI connection will work just fine with the software. What this means is that you can be sitting in a cafe watching live football or your favorite serials. You can get live satellite feed anywhere.

The software basically connects to the service provider and stream live satellite feed right to your desktop or laptop. This is not the typical episode downloads that you see online but the feeds are live. A good software like that will offer thousands of live channels in different languages for you to choose from. The best thing I like about this software is that you do not have to pay any monthly subscription to use it. Once the software is purchased, it entitles the user to live satellite feed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for as long as you like, free of charge, anywhere in the world.

Here are the summary of things to note before you buy satellite tv software:

1. It should come with a one-time fee. You only pay for the software and that's it.

2. A good software will offer more than 3000 channels worldwide for your viewing pleasure.

3. It should not cost more than $50.

4. Make sure that it supports your desktop or laptop's operation system (Windows XP, Vista, Mac, etc)

5. Read review about the software to have a better idea of what you are getting.
